My sisters Amanda, Karen, Sam, Lindsey and myself Tracey are trying to raise money for our brother Jason Collier who is only 31 years old, who has Primary Pulmonary Hypertension this is a progressive disease that damages the lungs and eventually leads to heart failure and death. The disease causes constriction of the tiny blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs;
their walls get thicker and thicker so they can’t carry as much blood, then the heart has to work harder to push the blood through, and eventually it simply can’t keep up. Less blood circulates through the lungs, so less oxygen is available to the body. The resulting symptoms are severe shortness of breath even with minimal exertion, dizzy spells, chest pain, and fainting. Over time, the lungs become damaged and the right side of the heart, which pumps blood through the lungs, becomes thickened and enlarged and heart failure develops.
Jason needs a heart and double lung transplant, at the moment he his in and out of hospital having fluid drained from his body, he is on oxygen most of the day for his breathing, he has a young daughter Reagan who loves her daddy so much and would like him to see her grow up. Jason is one of six children, the only boy and is the youngest of us all. Jason is a caring person, never complains. Just gets on with life the best he can.
How we found out about Jason’s illness it was one night in 1999 he came home from a night out with friends, tried to go upstairs and collapsed my dad picked him up and took him downstairs he seemed to come round a bit, he then tried to go upstairs again and collapsed, My dad phoned for an ambulance and they took him to hospital.
We did not know how serious it was until they told us he’d had two heart attacks we were all devastated as he was only 21 years old. That’s when the Doctors started to do tests on Jason and we found out he had this awful disease (Primary Pulmonary Hypertension) they gave him two years to live. He has now been struggling with this for 11 years (He just keeps on going, he’s a little fighter)
We recently took our brother to Germany for some Stem Cell treatment, His heart was too weak to place the Stem cells into his Pulmonary artery so they decided to give him the Stem cells through a drip into his arm. Jason has been home for a few weeks now and he does feel a bit better, The doctor in Germany said if his pressures in his heart come down he may be able to go back for more Stem cell treatment.
These doctors seem to have found a treatment for our brother’s life threatening disease which potentially could be a cure.
The reason for us writing this story is that we are hoping you will be kind enough to assist us in raising the money for our brother’s treatment and would be extremely grateful if you do. We just want the chance for our brother to see his daughter grow up and will do whatever it takes for this to happen. What ever extra money we raise we are going to try and raise awareness of this devastating illness and to try to set up a foundation were we can help other people like our brother go and get this life saving treatment.
We have a lot of fund raising ideas which are being processed at this moment.
Please consider making a donation to our cause. Thank you.
